On July 19, 2021 Baltic Environmental Forum Latvia environmental experts Anda Ruskule and Agnese Reķe joined the “MANA JŪRA” (“My sea”) annual campaign’s expedition.
The main theme of the campaign is marine litter. Not because it is the biggest problem affecting the Baltic sea and the coast. But this is like a proactive indicator: if we cannot cope with something as simple as it – how we will preserve our coasts and seas for future generations: climate change and erosion, marine pollution and eutrophication?
The expedition’s day started with marine litter monitoring and sampling for a microplastic pollution in the Ventspils beach, western coast of Latvia. Later on the experts together with the expedition walked disctance along the sea in length of 5 km from Ovīši to Miķeļbāka. During this walk experts also conducted a MAREA survey in which beach visitors were asked about the their favorite places of leisure by the Latvian sea for the needs of the MAREA project.
